Merton Borders - wild flower borders at the Oxford Botanic Garden from Oxford Botanic Garden on Vimeo.

This short video clip shows the stunning new Merton Border at the University of Oxford Botanic Garden. The border was created by Oxford Botanic Garden in collaboration with Professor James Hitchmough from the Department of Landscape at the University of Sheffield and feautures a naturalistic and highly attractive planting. This new feature is being developed as a sustainable planting scheme and is based on natural plant communities from North America, South Africa and the Mediterranean. Most of the plants were established by direct sowing into a 75mm sand mulch which was laid to exact levels by JSA Agriculture Limited. JSA prepared the 955m2 plots by levelling the ground as level as possibe and spreading top soil before the sand layer was spread. It was critical to get a firm depth of 75mm of sand as 50mm for instance would not suppress the emergence of large seeded weeds. The results are stunning so do please visit the gardens if you are visiting Oxford.
