Over-Seeding, Construction and Renovation

Many existing natural sports pitches, grass areas such as airfields and pasture land have deteriorated during years of use with little or no maintenance programme in place. Often, the areas started out as a 'grass field' and therefore the old grass sward is now unable to support regular use and recover from the effects of wear and tear.

Any natural grass surface will require regular maintenance and renovation to ensure that the surface stays in the best possible condition. We believe that the correct renovation programme is just as important as the construction itself, ensuring that the grass surface remains in the best possible condition at all times. A relatively small initial outlay at the end of the season can help breathe new life and extend the longevity of any natural grass sward.

Preparing soil for seeding

Poor drainage, water-logging and compaction are usually a problem for surfaces which have received little or no maintenance. This will usually lead to poor grass coverage & large wear areas, weed infestation and restricted use during the winter months. During summer months these areas often become hard with the surface becoming cracked and bare.

The right renovation programme

Choosing the right renovation programme is of paramount importance to ensure that your grass areas are brought back to its optimal condition and should be planned along with a thorough maintenance regime.

Over-seeding of an existing grass is a recognised essential part of annual lawn maintenance. All lawns are affected by the specific growing environment in which they exist, their level of use and general weather conditions. As a result, understanding the basic principles of overseeding and choice of seed mix will enable you to work with nature toward a greener and healthier grass sward.

Seeder

For bare ground which has yet to be sown we can offer an over-seeding service in conjunction with creating a suitable seedbed. The type of seed mix should be tailored to the intended use and advice is available to help you make the right choice.

Re-seeding and over-seeding can be performed when grass is growing and the soil is warm enough to allow the seed to germinate. Depending on weather conditions this is typically from late March through to late September.

JSA Landscape Group operate a range of Overseeders. Our 2.2 metre Vredo disc seeder has a very compact seed spacing of only 35mm. The discs create a slit where the seed is then dropped into and the rear roller closes the slit. This gives a very good seed to soil contact giving excellent germination results. Seeding is carried out in two to three different directions across the pitch to give a very even coverage The small seed spacing results in a thick, dense grass sward.

Other services we offer include

Deep Aeration: Verti Draining

Aeration of the soil is vital to encourage a good sward. Aeration can be carried out using a variety of methods. The ‘verti-drain’ machine uses tines to penetrate the soil which are either solid or hollow, depending on the soil conditions, time of year and desired effect. A massively influential machine in the pitch care industry, the ‘verti-drain’ is designed to de-compact the soil on sports pitches once or twice per year. Equally spaced holes of 25mm diameter and up to 300mm deep provide a surface pan shatter, allowing water and air to disperse to the grass roots a lot easier.

Top Dressing

Top dressing is an important operation that should be carried out at least once a year. Top dressing is the process of applying a fine layer of high quality soil to the surface of grass land. Our machinery can apply hundreds of tonnes of top dressing at a time which will help to improve your surface levels and create a better surface.

Laser Graders

Our state-of-the-art tractor mounted laser graders and Leica Geosystems free standing lasers can construct and complete the levels on any natural or artificial grass land surface to the tightest of tolerances.

All of our laser graders ensure a high degree of accuracy meaning that your grass areas surface can be constructed with a slight camber, if needed, to aid in water movement and surface drainage.
